Why I Teach?

    I believe that it takes a special type of person to take on the responsibility of teaching the young minds of our society. Teaching is one of those jobs that allows you to be able to see the growth and development of children firsthand, it doesn't matter what grade or subject you decide to teach it is inevitable that you will be able to witness the growth of an individual at some point.  The days where you are able to put a smile on students' faces who may be having a bad day, or the times where you are able to witness the joy on a child's face when they learn something new are those days that every teacher lives for. These are the reasons that I chose to teach, being able to be a positive impact on a child's life is something that I have always loved the idea of. I decided that I wanted to teach when I was in high school where I had the opportunity to work with kids through multiple high school programs. My dream grade to teach is the second grade in my hometown of San Antonio, TX. 

About Me: 

    My full name is Brooke Redding, I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas where I grew up in a family of five being the youngest of 3 kids. I actually grew up in a family of teachers who all graduated from Texas State, or  South West Texas, as they like to call it, so choosing where I wanted to go to college, was kind of a no-brainer. Fun fact about me, I grew up dancing since the age of 3. I actually still dance to this day taking jobs where my sister and I choreograph dances for schools and dance companies around the San Antonio area.  I have known that I would want to be a teacher ever since high school and I could never imagine doing anything else for the rest of my life. One of my major goals for my future teaching career is to be able to create a classroom where students are comfortable and feel safe. I hope to one day create a fun and effective learning environment where students are able to express themselves while still absorbing all learning material in an effective and efficient way.

    Teaching is such important work, isn't it? It is so great that got some experience with teaching while in high school. Having that experience and others will go a long way toward helping you reach your goal of creating a safe and comfortable environment in your classroom.

Educational Philosophies: the impact they have on education

  When it comes to teaching philosophies that teachers can choose to follow, different teaching methods do not come in short supply. There are methods that range from essentialism which is heavily based on lectures and bookwork to progressivism that is a more student-centered way of teaching. From being in school I have noticed that many of my teachers in the past have had a way of teaching that involved a lot of "busy work" like essays and worksheets, and in my personal experience, I feel like I may have not gotten the most of my past education through these types of teachings. As a person who is more of a hands-on learner, I love it when teachers are able to incorporate activities that require discussion and creative activities. How is teaching portrayed to the public?

  Thanks to things like TV, movies, and media our society has formed teacher stereotypes that range from teachers being lazy and bad educators to teachers becoming heroes and bringing a class of students with nothing in common together. One of my favorite examples of a teacher who is expected as the hero of the story is the well-known movie freedom writers that stem from the book with the same title. This movie follows a teacher by the name of Ms. Gruwell who has been given a job in a school that is divided by gang violence, throughout the movie you can see that Ms. Gurwell has taken her own money and time out of her personal life to fight for her kids, in order to give the best educational experience that she can while bringing the class together to overcome their differences. This is one of my favorite movies because there are so many aspects of this movie that actually do occur to many teachers.
